Mark Hlatky
is the Director of the Donald W Reynolds Cardiovascular Clinical Research Center at Stanford University, is Chair of the Department of Health Research and Policy, and was the Co-Director of the UCSF-Stanford EPC. He is a cardiologist with a long-standing interest in clinical trials, evidence-based medicine, and outcomes research. He led the UCSF-Stanford EPC reviews of Stable Angina and Unstable Angina, and served as a consultant to the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology guidelines development panels on these topics, which used the evidence reports in formulating their recommendations. He has published quantitative overviews on several topics in cardiovascular medicine, including CABG-PTCA clinical trials, the effect of thrombolytic therapy on cardiac rupture, the effect of anti-anginal therapies on clinical outcomes, the efficacy of anti-arrhythmic therapies, and the prognostic importance of elevated cardiac troponin levels. He has performed economic evaluations within several multi-center randomized clinical trials (eg BARI, VANQWISH, ESVEM, GUSTO), and has considerable experience with conducting randomized trials. He led the AHRQ-funded Cardiac Arrhythmia Patient Outcome Research Team (PORT) project, and directs the masters degree program in health services research at Stanford.
