Kaveh G. Shojania
is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Medicine at UCSF. Dr. Shojania’s research largely involves conducting systematic reviews of the literature in order to address topics that relate to hospital quality measurement, medical error reduction and improvements in patient safety. Dr. Shojania is interested in developing efficient ways of searching the healthcare literature and has published several papers on this topic. The electronic search strategy for systematic reviews reported in one of these papers will be incorporated as a search filter in the Clinical Queries section of PubMed, the MEDLINE interface supported by the National Library of Medicine. Dr. Shojania applies this interest in efficient search strategies to his role as Updates Editor for the online version of Cecil’s Textbook of Medicine. Dr. Shojania has also conducted research involving computerized physician order entry systems and is currently initiating a research project focusing on the organizational factors conducive to successful implementation of these systems. Dr. Shojania sits on the Risk Management and Patient Safety Committees for UCSF Medical Center and the Performance Improvement and Patient Safety Committee of the National Association of Inpatient Physicians. He is also collaborating with senior physicians in laboratory medicine at UCSF and University of Washington to develop systems for prospectively evaluating critical incidents involving laboratory errors.
