  Jonathan Showstack, Ph.D., M.P.H.

Jonathan Showstack is an Adjunct Professor of Medicine and Health Policy in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Institute for Health Policy Studies, School of Medicine at UCSF. He is Associate Director of the Institute. Dr. Showstack’s academic training is in sociology (organization theory and political economy) and health administration and planning. Dr. Showstack’s research focuses on technology assessment, factors associated with the costs and outcomes of medical care, strategic planning in health care organizations, and the impact of policies related to undergraduate and graduate health professions education. He has studied the changing use of hospital services over a ten year period for a selected set of diagnoses; the association of volume with outcome for coronary artery bypass surgery performed in California; the costs of kidney and liver transplantation; the costs of treatment of infertility; and factors associated with perinatal outcomes, including insurance status and amount of prenatal care. From 1986 to 1998 Dr. Showstack was Co-Director of the Health of the Public Program, a grant-making effort supported by The Pew Charitable Trusts and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that assisted academic health centers in the United States and Canada to become more population and community-oriented. He is currently coordinating the development of a conference on “The Future of Primary Care” and is directing a project that is making grants to innovative projects that address issues that are facing the allied and auxiliary health care workforce.
