John W. Finney
has been affiliated with the Center for Health Care Evaluation at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System
for over 25 years and is a Consulting Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
at Stanford University. For the most part, his work has consisted of conceptually-driven, process-outcome
evaluations of substance abuse treatment programs, and a comprehensive meta-analysis of alcoholism
treatment outcome research reported between 1970 and 1998. Attempting to glean evidence for matching
patients to optimal treatments has been a focus in both types of projects. Translating research on
effective substance abuse treatment practices into clinical care is a third area of interest. In that
regard, Dr. Finney is currently the Research Coordinator for the VA's Quality Enhancement Research
Initiative (QUERI) Substance Abuse Module.
