George F. Sawaya
is an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the University of California in San Francisco (UCSF). He holds a joint appointment at the same level in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at UCSF. Clinically, he is a generalist and provides both obstetrical and gynecological care, primarily at San Francisco General Hospital, where he directs the Colposcopy and Cervical Dysplasia Clinic. His current main research interest is in cervical cancer screening with particular interest in new technologies, cost-effectiveness and utility, novel approaches to population-based screening and risk communication. He also teaches and performs systematic reviews and meta-analyses in the area of women’s health. He has been awarded a Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award from the National Cancer Institute to study cervical cancer screening outcomes in older women. He is currently on the cervical cancer guidelines committee for the American Cancer Society and has authored screening guidelines for UCSF. He is a board member of the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program administered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. His teaching focus is in evidence-based medicine. At UCSF, he has designed and currently teaches the curriculum in evidence-based medicine that is required for all medical students.
