Research Interests
genetic epidemiology of cardiovascular disease; treatment with bupropion for maintenance of smoking cessation; reduction of social exchange and tobacco marketing directed at youth; control of cholesterol and other lipid disorders


Stephen Fortmann is the C.F. Rehnborg Professor of Disease Prevention; professor, by courtesy, of Health Research and Policy, and a CHP/PCOR associate. He is also director of the Stanford Prevention Research Center, an interdisciplinary group of investigators conducting innovative research on the prevention and control of chronic disease. He is also director of the prevention research center's Training Program in Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention. He is associate director of preventive cardiology and an attending physician on the medical service at Stanford Hospital and Clinics.

Fortmann is trained in general internal medicine, epidemiology, and prevention. He has extensive experience directing large-scale community and clinical trials, involving knowledge of experimental design, measurement, behavioral intervention, analysis, and fiscal management. He has particular experience in measuring cardiovascular risk factors, community surveillance of cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality, minimal-contact behavioral and pharmacological intervention for smoking cessation, the relationship between nutrition and lipoproteins, hypertension treatment and control, mass media health education methods, preventive cardiology, and the clinical management of lipid disorders. He has extensive experience leading interdisciplinary research groups.
