Crystal Smith-Spangler joined PCOR in August 2008 as a VA Physician Fellow in Health Services Research and Development.
She is interested in helping clinicians and policy makers make informed decisions on patient treatment and policy options regarding common, costly health conditions. She uses decision analysis, cost-effectiveness analysis, meta-analysis, and large database evaluation to understand ways to improve these decisions, focusing on cardiovascular disease and obesity.
Smith-Spangler graduated from Duke University with a BS in Biology and minor in Health Policy, served as a Peace Corps Volunteer (Mauritania, West Africa) in health/water sanitation, and received her medical degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She completed her residency training in Internal Medicine at Stanford in 2008. She is working to complete a Masters of Science in Health Services Research at Stanford.
During residency training in Stanford, Crystal worked with PCOR faculty on a meta-analysis evaluating the effectiveness of pedometer interventions. She was recognized with the Best Resident Oral Presentation Award at the 2007 National SGIM Conference (CA region) for this work.
