Research Interests
quality measurement and quality improvement, chronic disease management, and the experiences of underserved communities
Amar Desai joined CHP/PCOR in July 2006 as a trainee with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's Fellowship in Health Care Research and Policy. He is concurrently pursuing a fellowship in nephrology at the University of California-San Francisco, where he completed his residency in primary care internal medicine. He is interested in quality-oriented health systems change, chronic disease management, and the experiences of underserved communities.
His current research focuses on quality measurement for dialysis facilities and understanding the impact of financing policy on quality of care for patients with kidney disease. He has worked on the implementation of a new clinical information system for the UCSF Medical Center and has conducted research examining the effectiveness of computer-based systems to improve clinician compliance with clinical practice guidelines. In addition, he has conducted research on topics including quality of care in the treatment of Barretts Esophagus and the importance of routine HIV testing among prison inmates. He received a BA in public policy from Brown University, an MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health, and an MD from Brown University.
