Is more U.S. medical spending worth it? Not necessarily, Fuchs says in New York Times

Health care is consuming an increasing portion of the U.S. gross domestic product, and according to one Nobel laureate, by 2030 it will account for 25 percent of the nation's GDP, the New York Times reports in an Aug. 22 article. But is the increased spending on health care worth it? Some prominent economists say that the answer is yes because Americans are generally well-off and can afford it. But CHP/PCOR core faculty member Victor Fuchs disagrees, explaining that buying health care is fundamentally different from other consumer goods, and that a key consideration should be whether healthcare spending brings the most value for the dollar.
