American Medical News covers study on medical technology, spending

An article in the Dec. 15 issue of American Medical News, a weekly publication of the American Medical Association, discusses a recent study led by CHP/PCOR fellow Laurence C. Baker that examined the relationship between the availability of medical technology and healthcare spending. The study, which was released by the journal Health Affairs as a ?Web exclusive? on Nov. 5, found that the increasing availability of medical technology (including CT and MRI scans, cardiac catheterization facilities and neonatal ICUs) is almost always associated with higher utilization and is thus a major driver of rising healthcare costs.
