The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act includes $1.1 billion in funding for comparative effectiveness research (CER). CER is intended to improve medical care by providing better information about the relative effectiveness of alternative care management strategies. Many of its advocates also expect that CER will lead to substantial cost savings. However, estimates of the savings possible from such research vary and suggest that the savings will take several years to materialize. I describe our research project on the potential savings from the application of comparative effectiveness research in two specific areas, and discuss how cost-effectiveness methods would influence the application of comparative effectiveness results.
