Growing national interest in methods for monitoring and improving patient safety led the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to fund the UCSF-Stanford Evidence-based Practice Center to develop quality indicators for patient safety using routinely collected administrative data. In this talk, we will describe 1) our development of the AHRQ Patient Safety Indicators (PSIs), 2) the opportunities and obstacles of using administrative data indicators, 3) our Support for Quality Indicators (SQI) project which bridges the research group with users of the AHRQ Quality Indicator software including PSI programs, and 4) plans for further research to improve and utilize the PSIs and other quality indicators.
