Outcomes research has become more feasible with the increasing use of clinical databases and electronic record systems. With the support of the American Heart Association, we recently organized a Stanford-Kaiser Cardiovascular Outcomes Research Center to assess the effectiveness in unselected patient populations of treatments for coronary disease and heart failure. One particular goal was to assess the methods used in outcomes research. I will discuss some early work using observational data to compare treatments, and methods for evaluating new risk markers.
