Developing new self-report measures to be appropriate for diverse ethnic groups involves a sequence of steps using a blend of qualitative and quantitative methods to assure conceptual and psychometric adequacy and equivalence. This seminar will summarize the development of a new patient-reported instrument measuring several dimensions of interpersonal processes of care, including subdomains of communication, patient-centered decision making, and interpersonal style. The measures were developed to facilitate research examining potential mechanisms for health disparities by race and ethnicity.
