The rapid uptake of drug-eluting stents was based on the results of randomized trials that indicated dramatic improvement in outcomes compared with prior stent technology. We will compare various methods for assessing the clinical effectiveness of drug eluting stents and discuss our recently published study comparing drug-eluting and bare-metal stent outcomes. We will summarize points of the drug-eluting stent development, approval and assessment process that supported widespread uptake of this technology.
