Speaker
David Buckeridge - Graduate student of biomedical informatics at Stanford University

Health services researchers routinely conduct retrospective studies using

data generated through the administration of health care. Recently, a number

of groups have implemented systems that conduct prospective analysis of

administrative data for the purpose of detecting outbreaks. The main

argument for conducting surveillance of administrative data is that it can

detect an outbreak more quickly than traditional surveillance approaches. In

this seminar, the speaker will examine the evidence for this argument, and will describe his research to develop a method for evaluating outbreak detection in

surveillance systems that use administrative data.
