Systematic reviews have an anomalous duality. They are being conducted with increasing frequency and are influencing public health policy, yet the evidence base and understanding as to how to conduct them is limited. Similarly, our ability to improve their quality of reporting has considerable room for improvement.

In this talk I will present the methodology and results of cross sectional analysis of all systematic reviews indexed on Medline during November 2004. The results will be discussed in light of our current understanding of the systematic review process, their methodological underpinnings, and reporting standards, focusing on the revised QUOROM Statement. The talk will conclude with some challenges facing the systematic review community.
